Short answer

Post one free request on Bidit in the Movers category with your move type, the size of the home, where you move from and to, and the date. Then answer the questions movers price on: the floor you leave from, whether there is an elevator, heavy items such as a piano, packing help, storage and how flexible your date is. Moving businesses send private offers, and you choose one, or none.

Around July 1, when many Québec leases end, say clearly whether your date can move: the request form asks for it.

What to check before you hire

Every offer carries one of three labels: "Licence verified" (Bidit has verified it), "Licence not yet verified by Bidit" or "No licence number provided". A business can make an offer before Bidit has verified it, so read the label before you choose.

Documents a mover can give Bidit include a provincial business registration, membership in the Canadian Association of Movers, a cargo insurance certificate and workers' compensation (CNESST) registration. None of these is checked automatically against a public register, so read the label on each offer and ask the mover for the documents.

• Ask each mover how the price is set (a fixed price or an hourly rate with an estimate) and what is included (truck, crew, packing material, travel time).
• Ask for the mover's insurance for your belongings in transit and get the agreement in writing.
